DEFRA and the “RAPID REVIEW” of the current Agricultural Policy

At the Oxford Farming Conference yesterday, DEFRA Farming Minister, Mark Spencer, has announced developments for both Countryside Stewardship (now to be developed to replace the proposed Local Nature Recovery Scheme) and the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) in England.

SFI – Additional Management Payment of £20/ha on the first 50 hectares of land entered into the scheme.

Countryside Stewardship Revenue payment rates increased by an average of 10%.

Countryside Stewardship Capital items payment rates increased by an average of 40%.

Both new and existing agreements will benefit from the increases.

However, there is no increase in rates for Environmental Stewardship.

“This is some positive news for farmers and land managers and will give further encouragement to invest in their businesses while also helping to deliver the governments environmental targets”
