Would you like to have a pond created or restored on your land?
In support of Natural England’s District Level Licensing (DLL) scheme, Natural England are offering to design and create, or restore ponds on your land at no cost to you, providing valuable habitat for great crested newts.
These ponds will be maintained for a 25-year period, during which Durham Wildlife Trust will work with you to agree on a management plan that meets the scheme’s requirements while remaining sensitive to your needs.
Great crested newts have undergone significant population declines over the past 60 years, despite being protected under UK and EU legislation. Since 1900, around half of the UK’s ponds have disappeared, leading to a substantial loss of suitable habitat for the species.
District Level Licensing seeks to address this by creating a connected network of high-quality habitats for great crested newts across the landscape. By taking part, you can help support this rare amphibian, as well as other local wildlife while enjoying the added benefit of a new or restored pond on your land. Participation in the scheme is entirely voluntary and non-legally binding.
