Are you compliant with SSFAO regulations or Water Resources (Control of Pollution) (Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil) (England) Regulations?
With winter approaching and stock being housed have you considered whether your silage clamp or slurry storage meets current legislation?
Much greater emphasis is on water quality, and the Environment Agency (EA) are tasked with enforcing the rules for the storage of these potentially hazardous materials. While any store or clamp built before March 1991 is exempt from the regulations, if modified or enlarged it is no longer exempt. The Environment Agency have the power to stop you using an unsuitable silage, slurry or agricultural fuel store until its improved.
If you do not follow the rules or take care to avoid causing pollution, you can be prosecuted and fined up to £5,000 in a magistrates’ court, or get an unlimited fine in the Crown Court.
At Vickers and Barrass we can help you to understand the legislation and potentially avoid issues with the EA.
