How will Brexit and other agricultural legislation affect the farming industry?
THE trade deal struck between the UK and European Union sparked relief for farmers, amid fears a no-deal exit would have cut off access to EU markets overnight. More than 60 per cent of the UK’s agricultural food and drink production – worth £14.5bn to economy – is exported to the EU, making it the largest trading partner for British farmers.
Concerns remain about the financial impact of new checks, paperwork and regulatory requirements for businesses trading with the EU, and then there is the enormous issue of the UK Government’s complete redesign of post-Brexit farm support to grapple with.
“This is why our focus has firmly been on understanding the proposals from DEFRA regarding the Agricultural Transition Plan 2021 to 2024 and the plethora of new schemes and initiatives which will eventually replace the Common Agricultural Policy system of payments.” says Adam Barrass, Managing Director and Chartered Surveyor at Vickers and Barrass who shared his thoughts in the recent Northern Farmer magazine.
“There are no fewer than 14 new schemes and initiatives for farmers and land managers to consider for their businesses” Adam continues as he explains his firm’s thinking.
“We now know for certain how much the Basic Payment is being reduced over the coming 4 years. For lots of businesses reliant on that regular amount of income to finance ongoing commitments and investment, a shortfall is likely to hit the bottom line dramatically.” points out Adam.
“As a firm we have a particular focus on upland beef and sheep producers who are the most vulnerable to a reduction in direct payments”
